Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) |
|
The MBTI has been used for over 60 years, and is one of the most widely used personality tools today. MBTI is based on the Swiss Psychologist Carl Young’s theory of type preferences. A mother and daughter team, Isabel Briggs Myers and Katherine Briggs, developed the MBTI instrument together. Myers devoted her life to this questionnaire, and she was a bit of a visionary. MBTI is based on Carl Jung's Psychological Types, but Myers continued to develop the concept of personality types up to and throughout World War Two, believing that if people could better understand each other, the world would become a better place. MBTI can be used for a number of things, including:
- Helping with management style
- Helping to understand how a person is the same, or different to others
- Helping with team building
- Helping to improve communication
- Helping to manage conflict
- Helping to manage stress
- Helping to manage your development over time
MBTI is based around preference, and gives a person the chance to explore those preferences. All types are good, and have potential, and the results will show a person's strengths and abilities. MBTI and Stress Because MBTI is about understanding and working with an individual's personality type, it can prove very useful in stress management, helping them to use their natural strengths to overcome difficult moments. Personality types can be very useful in developing a stress management plan. MBTI and Careers Research has shown that often people of a particular personality type get on especially well in certain careers. With MBTI, it is possible to explore a person's personality type and then use that to consider the career directions that may be particularly suited to them. MBTI and Teams MBTI can be used to increase a team's awareness and understanding of one another, by helping them to understand the personality types that make up the team. Different personality types tend to interact in different ways with one another, and by gaining a new understanding of the other types within a group it is possible to help them to work better as a team.
