Innovation Potential Indicator (IPI)

741263_spring_flowersThe Innovation Potential Indicator looks at behaviors which affect new ideas, considering how processes and products are generated, implemented and developed. It is designed to measure a candidate’s future potential for innovation and considers the methods by which new ideas may be applied by an individual for the benefit of the organisation.

The IPI can also be used with teams; by combining individual profiles, it is possible to support the group in its development of a more creative atmosphere.

Employers may wish to use the IPI at recruitment level, or to help further develop innovation within the work of existing employees. It is particularly useful within an environment which is prone to change, as it encourages individuals to adapt and be flexible.

It can be extremely useful for:

  • Selection
  • Development
  • Career planning

By considering four key areas, the IPI gives a framework by which we can begin to understand those behaviours which may either lead to or prevent innovation within the workplace:

Motivation to Change:
How strong is the individual's drive to seek out and adopt change?

Challenging Behaviour:
How does the individual interact with others? Are they likely to challenge others' thinking as they try to solve problems?

Adaptation:
Does the individual prefer to use known methods when tackling problems or do they like to try new perspectives?

Consistency of Work Styles:
How flexible is the individual when using a range of work styles? How do they deal with incomplete instructions?

The IPI helps individuals to understand which behaviours might be of particular use in pursuit of innovation and can also increase appreciation of different approaches. Because it is easy to understand the system, it also becomes easier to encourage particular types of behaviour within the organisation.
