A wide range of approaches to coaching exist nowadays. One of these is called Cognitive Behavioural Coaching, or CBC, and is based on the principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Cognitive behavioural approaches to coaching emphasise that how a person views an event determines how they react to it. Cognitive Behavioural Coaching examines the less helpful views and uses them to encourage the use of the more effective viewpoints and behaviours. This type of coaching does not offer any quick fixes to deal with change or personal difficulties; it requires commitment and sustainable effort, but it is extremely effective in the long term.Cognitive Behavioural Coaching is a guided facilitative model of coaching, shaped to help people discover their own solutions. A coach will use Socratic questioning to encourage the person to examine their own thoughts, and will then employ their CBC tools to help uncover any psychological blocks and give the person additional insight and awareness, allowing rational decision making to materialize. Since each individual is a unique human being, there are no right or wrong answers; coaching is therefore a very personal experience, as the coach works with each person individually to explore the best solution for them. Cognitive Behavioural Coaching deals with the here and now, to help guide current behaviour in the right direction. CBC offers a vast array of tools, allowing the coach to work with a variety of problems: changes, assertion problems, psychological blocks, anxiety, performance problems, and many more. |
